Homegrown El Paso is a new independent organization of local businesses and not-for-profit organizations with a goal of educating local citizens and businesses of the importance of buying from independent, locally owned businesses
Why is it so important to buy from independent, locally owned businesses?
Locally owned businesses here, like elsewhere in the United States (and the rest of the world), are being displaced by large national and international businesses. Additionally, locals are buying more from out-of-town businesses on the Internet.
When we don’t buy locally, El Paso is affected in two ways:
- The vibrancy, uniqueness, personal service and character of local businesses that make El Paso special are displaced by big box stores, chain restaurants and national retailers.
- When you buy from a locally owned independent business, more of your money stays in El Paso. A study in Austin, Texas, showed that for every $100 spent at a chain, $13 stayed in the community while $45 remained when spent with a local business! Creating local prosperity by adding more out-of-town businesses is a myth if most of the money disappears from El Paso!
